Gothic Subculture
ArchAngel: I actually looked up the true definition and origins of the term "goth" (when used as a reference to modern subculture) and found out I was right all along, I'm not a goth. Not even really that close. Up yours, Average American, it's about time you learn that a color alone does not define one's place in society.
ArchAngel: And, as it turns out, one of the big indicators I'm not a goth is my affinity for trench coats, a trait that is most strongly associated with metal and death rock subcultures, groups with which I'm even less inclined towards.
Ophan: Who on earth ever called you goth? Pfft...
Astaroth: R U LOSING YOUR DAMN MIND DUDE?
Ophan: He's always been like this.
ArchAngel: Everyone calls me goth. Just cause I go to an FRG function in a fishnet top, black cowboy hat and leather trench coat. People need to learn the difference and think before they speak.
For the record, sorry Ophan, but your culture still comes off to me as a bunch of whiny, self-effacing group of bitchy pseudo intellectuals. And the music sucks. On the upside, studies are starting to show that you guys only cut yourselves with any regularity before you join the growing ranks of Gothic Culture. The shared solidarity helps stem that type of behavior.
Astaroth, what the hell are you talking about? Go to the library instead of the gym one day and do a few reps with a book, for God's sake.
Seraph: Goth talk is stupid. If people think you're 'weird' they assume you're goth.
Ophan: I appreciate the goth look, and some of the music. I like a lot of different styles of music, but at the moment mainly industrial and neofolk. Cutting has nothing to do with any culture, in my opinion. I certainly don't wear fishnet, or much leather, unless I go to the only goth/industrial club in Baltimore, Orpheus, and as far as the "gothy cowboy look"....check this song out, it's Gothic Christian Cowboys. And it's actually a really good song. You might like it. great play on words.
[I apologize, I'm missing the link to the song she's referring to.]
ArchAngel: Cutting is strongly associated, albeit wrongly so, with Gothic Culture. There are also other subcultures that are commonly mistaken for goth that deal with these misconceptions. Unfortunately, average "culture" (by that I mean those that apply the labels) is anything but, totally lacking in sophistication or depth. I like to call these people sheep, due to the mindless herd mentality they live their lives by. Poor bastards. They don't even have the baseline intelligence necessary to recognize reality outside of their microcosmic existence.
I suppose it takes all kinds though, as they say. After all, without the sheep of the world, how would I get my Chicken McNuggets and assorted goods from Walmart? You could train a nominally intelligent ape to do these jobs, but you actually have to pay more for them. Even a functionally retarded monkey's worth more than the adults the "popular kids" in high school turned into. That would be funny, if it weren't so sad.
If that last bit offended anyone, that probably means you need to find a new line of employment, or at least stop taking your joke of an existence so seriously.
Ophan: Haha... I'm well versed in your sheep theory. You used to call me one all the time, and I'm still not sure if you did to get a rise out of me or because you really though so. I certainly don't think I am, but then again I hesitate to put my self into any category.
ArchAngel: I believe you were one of the black sheep, the people that did things as a direct result of social tides instead of individual preference, but instead of going with the tide, you intentionally went against it. I think, at the time, I actually meant it, and I believe, at the time, it was true. however that was years ago, and now I'm sure you listen to the music you do as a result of natural poor taste, which is a kind of individual preference.
Even when I say something positive I manage to eclipse it with an insult. That in and of itself is not impressive, but when you consider I hold to that pattern without deviation, it really says something about my commitment to personal continuity.
Astaroth: You must be bored ArchAngel
ArchAngel: No, I'm always like this. I'm actually busy building the foundation for a galaxy-spanning empire at the moment, but mining asteroids is not a very involved activity, so I have time to read and be disagreeable on Facebook.
Ophan: I have my character, haha! ArchAngel, dear, your music sucks. But that's okay, it's only my opinion, and if you're happy with it, that's cool. And you don't have to listen to mine either, but you do have a preconceived notion as to what I listen to, as I don't have it listed in my info. Ack... can you even list 10 bands I like? And yes, you are very consistent. I applaud you.
Astaroth: True he is
Ophan: I've known him since I was about 12, haha...
ArchAngel: Seeing as how you're a figment of a dream I myself am having, that would make my "preconceived notions" synonymous with "reality."
Eat it.
Ophan: Hahahahaha!!! You probably aren't going to like this, but I feel like I win!!!! : P
ArchAngel: Because I didn't even try to name any bands? Ophan, you post that stuff all the time. when I Googled "goth" to read up on it, under the music and modern culture heading they listed a lot of bands as defining music for said culture. At least seven or eight of them I only recognized from having seen the band names on your posts.
Ophan: Do you ever even take the time to listen to any of the stuff I post? I think the only CD I ever lent you was an old Circle of Dust album.... I always listen to pretty much all of the songs other people post. Always a chance you'll find something new...
ArchAngel: No, I don't know if you'd taken notice, but I'm kind of a dick. My wife introduces me to new stuff though.
For the record, my connection here doesn't really make it easy for me to just hop on over to YouTube links and such. I can do it if I feel like waiting a half hour for a 5 minute video to load.
Ophan: Gotcha.
ArchAngel: And, as it turns out, one of the big indicators I'm not a goth is my affinity for trench coats, a trait that is most strongly associated with metal and death rock subcultures, groups with which I'm even less inclined towards.
